Graduated from UC Irvine with a double major in Art and Film and Media Studies, Theone Ly is a Vietnamese American director/producer based in Los Angeles, CA. Influenced by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Wes Anderson, Theone is consumed by fantasy storytelling and world-building. Her works have a daydream quality to them, whether it's bright and innocent like a summer day or dark and twisted like a sleep paralysis nightmare. Floating in the limbo of light and darkness, Theone's artistic vision seeks to explore the deepest realms of the human mind. Her music videos and web series have been featured in major festivals like the Newport Beach Film Festival and Dances with Films.
With her experience in storytelling, branding and marketing, Theone co-founded BLVCKĐEN alongside her partner Jonathan Del Pozo, an established animator who has formerly worked at Activision. BLVCKĐEN is a creative production company that specializes in video production for music artists and small businesses.
Theone's journey as a director started when she became the co-director at Divercity Productions, a production company that focuses on telling stories about POC and LGBTQ+. She managed 35 remote freelancers to produce dozens of interviews for Asian American educators, activists, and non-profit organizations like Okaeri and API SGV PFLAG.
For over two years, Theone was a commercial director/producer at Narrative, an advertising agency based in Pasadena, CA. There, she had created high quality commercials and branded contents for Proactiv, FlexFit, Stitch Fix, True Botanicals, Pretty Litter, and many other brands...
Asides from directing and producing, Theone works professionally as a First Assistant Director on set for Hulu, Tubi, Bank of America, Tableau/Salesforce, etc… With the little free time she has left, Theone continues to hone her writing skills, working on scripts for her short and feature films to further establish herself as a storyteller.
Theone's goal is to continue to make films and artistic videos that promote Asian representation in Hollywood and celebrate her Vietnamese heritage and culture. Regardless what set she's on and what role she holds, she aims to cultivate an inclusive and safe working environment for her cast and crew so that Hollywood can be a better place for BIPOC/LGBTQ+ creatives and filmmakers.
